Daytime

Help Your Child Manage Anger
When: Two sessions!
Thursday, October 13, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (1 afternoon) OR
Wednesday, November 2, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (1 afternoon)

Is your child angry or acting out? This workshop will help you teach your children how to manage their emotional responses. We’ll examine coping strategies for anger and stress management for both parents and children. You’ll also learn to recognize your own anger triggers and how to release anger safely so you can lead by example.

Help Your Child Succeed at School: Tutoring Skills for Parents
When: Wednesday, October 19, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (1 afternoon)

Where: Grand Valley Public Library, 4 Amaranth Street East, Grand Valley
Do your children hate homework or struggle in class? You can help them improve their grades and be more successful while increasing their confidence and self-esteem. This workshop will provide practical ways to learn how your child learns and provide strategies to help your child in an effective and enjoyable manner.

Healthy Lunches for Kids (Even Picky Eaters)

All children experience worries during the various stages of their development. It can interfere with daily functioning and impact their ability to cope. This workshop addresses ways parents can support and intervene while identifying causes, symptoms and developing coping skills in their children.

Unconditional Parenting…A More Effective Approach
When: November 14, 21, 28 and December 5, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. (4 evenings)
Where: Parkinson Centennial Public School, 120 Lawrence Avenue
Unconditional Parenting is a DVD by Alfie Kohn…It starts with the question, #&8220;What are our long-term goals for our children?” It then follows that we need to work with them rather than doing things to them, in order to reach those goals. Kohn argues that punishments (including time-outs) and rewards (including positive reinforcement) may sometimes produce temporary compliance, but they do nothing to help kids grow into responsible, caring, ethical, happy people. Kohn concludes with ten important guidelines to help viewers reconnect to their own best instincts as parents.

Positive Parenting from Separate Homes
When: November 21, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. (1 evening)
Where: DCAFS, 655 Riddell Road
Are you worried about the effects of separation, divorce and parenting from two homes on your children? Learn to manage these changes to ensure that your children don’t get caught in the middle of parental conflict. You will learn to understand your feelings, your children’s needs and develop a business-like relationship with the other parent. You will not be asked to talk about your individual situation as the program is for general information.

This session is designed to help parents, friends, and family gain an increased understanding of autism spectrum disorders. This workshop will provide an overview of autism and community resources, with an emphasis on practical support strategies and approaches.
